It's always this way, isn't it? Cyclist collides with bus. Never bus hits cyclist. Doncha know, we're just a suicidal species.

"...killed in Manhattan on Monday morning when the Citi Bike he was riding collided with a charter bus....   ...when he swerved to go around a parked van, struck a bus next to him that was traveling in the same direction, tumbled off the bicycle and fell under the bus’s rear tires, the police said. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/12/nyregion/citi-bike-death-manhattan.html?

Is there just a chance that maybe, you know, the bus driver kinda, like, saw the cyclist and van ahead of him and, you know, forseeing the situation, rather than figure the cycist should just plow into the back of the van, coulda, maybe, you know, let up to let the cyclist in. And do ya think, gosh, maybe that van was, oh, let's just say double-parked? Wanna bet on his parking ticket?

Pointing out another key word

Pointing out another key word in the article "swerve" to turn aside abruptly in movement or direction; deviate suddenly fromthe straight or direct course.

Police account is wrong, again.

[Edit]
If "professional" drivers aren't held accountable for killing other vulnerable road users. There's really no good reason for them to show consideration for people who get in their way. Just heard about this other sad fatality in the same neighborhood coming back from Penn Station tonight. Look out for a bike ticket bliss coming your way.

I've learned long ago to ride on the left side of any one-way street in Manhattan. In both of these incidents, it could've been the difference. You're in the driver's face more and less susceptible to the right hook (more blind spots on the right side of large vehicles.)

Great tip

Fully agree...if possible, I always ride on the driver's side of the road.

Also, assume that every vehicle that can possibly turn into your path will! Regardless of traffic lights and turn signals too.

The bus driver is finally arrested and charged... With misdemeanor

I guess the DA office had to do something.

Did not swerve into bus as earlier reports stated

Dan Hanegby, the 36-year-old man killed by a commercial bus driver in Chelsea this June, did not swerve into a bus moments before he was fatally struck, prosecutors said Tuesday. Instead, the criminal complaint against bus driver Dave Lewis states that he honked at Hanegby, then struck and killed the cyclist in the process of passing him.

...as if I could resist commenting on the article....

"I then observed on the video the bus attempt to and successfully overtake and pass said bicyclist, at which point the bus struck said bicyclist," (José) Diaz (the cop filing the report) stated.

Yeah, right, Diaz: The driver successfully passed the cyclist...except that he hit and killed the cyclist. You've got some perverse sense of success.

""First and foremost Mr. Lewis (the driver) is distraught and upset," (Jeremy) Saland (the killer-driver's lawyer) told Gothamist. Uh, no, Mr. Saland. First and foremost Dan Hanegby is quite dead, quite killed by your client in a foreseeable act of disregard of others.

Designated routes for large vehicular, trucks, busses

Not noted in most of these accounts is that the bus had swerved hundreds of feet from designated bus routes.
