If there is a rider in the club who is ever considerate and responsible a rider it is Jerry Ross.

Sunday afternoon a pedestrian steps out from between parked cards. Predictably, the cop in the scene starts to write it up as "cyclist hits pedestrian" because, you know, we are always, always, always riding into buses, garbage and other trucks, taxis, cars...and pedestrians. That's just our nature, isn't it...well, according to the police.

Result: Ped is fine. Jerry isn't. Shattered hip socket. Surgery Monday at St. Luke's.

Thank you all for your outpouring of support

Dear friends,

I am absolutely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, good wishes and, well, love all of you have shown to me over the last few days.

The accident wasn't pleasant and a fractured hip is no joke. But I was fortunate; the woman who struck me was not seriously hurt. It could have turned out much worse for her.

It appears I won't need surgery but will have to keep weight off the hip for a while.

Again, thank you all.

Jerry Ross

Get well soon Jerry!

Glad you don't need surgery, Jerry!  When I broke my pelvis four years ago, I had to use a walker (tennis balls and all) for the first few weeks...it's more stable than crutches or a cane.  I felt like a real altacaca (sp???), but the healing did happen.  So sorry you had to go through this!!!

Wish him a Speedy recovery

Jerry was the leader on my first ever ride with NYCC, certainly the reason I continued riding with NYCC. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Jerry is the star of the show

He's been a leader in every sense of the word since I first joined the NYCC, was on some of my early C rides, and even leads the hardy few on Central park training rides throughout the winter. He's a leader in terms of encouraging every aspect of cycling, too, for pretty much everybody in the Club.

Delighted to hear that he won't need hip surgery, sad to hear that it'll be weeks before we see him on a bike again.

GET WELL QUICK!

So sorry!

Jerry, I'm so sorry to hear about this. Life is unfair if not cruel.

For your recovery, may I suggest a week at this mineral spa near palm Springs, which has an airport. Spa is non swanky and affordable with a good cheap restaurant. You can limp from pool to pool, 8 in all from underground at different temps. No piped muzak. Two days and stress disappears.

Cycling is not tempting here, though pedaling a cruiser around PS could be if you were able.

This goes for Hal too, whom I did not manage to sympathize with in a timely manner.

Heal fast!

Get Well, Jerry!

Jerry-

So sorry to hear this, but happy for you that you won't need surgery. You are a fixture in our club and, obviously, and deservedly, loved by all.

Heal up, and get back out there, my friend.

And the good news is . . . .

The bike doesn't have a scratch on it.

I am improving every day; it's really remarkable how the body heals itself.

And again, thank you all -- good friends.

Sending healing vibes from your fellowess foldie

Jerry! Sorry to hear about your "biingle" (as we call it downunder) ... were you on your little bronze Friday? If so, I'd have hoped you might have been able to jump free given the lower downtube, which was always one of its (real or imagined) benefits in my mind...This also got me thinking about trikes and how they might mitigate that whole "sideways falling" thing, not to mention allow us to "take the lane" with more conviction. Maybe that's the commuter bike of the future... but enough whatiffing, get well soon, I'm sure your supreme fitness will ensure your speedy recovery!  Lynette heart

What can we do to help?

Horrible turn of events, so sorry to hear, Jerry.

What do you need, or want, or can you use in support or help?

Thinking of you!  (plus as we all know . . . there but for the grace of god go any of us!)

Best to you always,

Susan

Lawyering himself up!

(Since Jerry's a lawyer I hope he'll be able to straighten the cops etc out. Shucks if he can't, there's scant hope for the rest of us)

Update: what the... the rest of my reply here was totally truncated... I meant to say, see you soon on your little wheels, Jerry!

My e-note to Jerry 11 days ago and an update

Dear Jerry,

I am so very saddened by this terrible news. If there was such a thing as fairness, this should not have happened to you. You perform such great service for our terrific club, I am honored to work along side and know you. Please do not hesitate to ask me for help of you need anything (except money, of course).

I wish you a complete and quick recovery. Having gone through total hip replacement surgery in 2007 (not knowing if this is the plan for you) I can tell you the recovery can be speedy and complefely successful. I was back my trainer in 4 weeks and cycling in Prospect Park in 6 weeks. I will see you at the hospital in a couple of days.

Hang in there, we need you!
Warmly,
Eden

I called Jerry the next day and he reported that he would not need surgery and was going home in few hours. Great news, but we still need to continue to give him our support. No one gives more to our club than Jerry. I am so very fortunate to have had the pleasure of working along side of him on the board for numerous years.

Eden,

Thank you for your kind words and taking the time to call me. But I have to warn you. If you keep this up I'll have to find a way to have more accidents! Seriously, everyone has been absolutely wonderful.
