A most amazing route. But only for the well prepared. 134 miles in one day requires, speed, stamina, daylight, weather and forethought. As of 1/2011, the first train from GCT arrives in Wassaic at 10:08 am! Trains to Wassaic run 2 hours apart. Missing the return train by 10 minutes might mean an hour and fifty minute wait. Great views, low traffic, hill climbs 7500 ft elevation (day 1 3200 ft, Day 2 4300 max+ grade 15%). I've done this ride in summer and mid Oct. (even more spectacular). St. Charles Hotel has 24-hr cancellation policy (confirm when booking). Travel light (bring laundry soap and wash your bike clothes--St. Charles has washer/dryer. CVS in town for toiletries. Alternatively you can mail stuff ahead to St. Charles and leave UPS mailing label for return pick-up at hotel. St. Charles has a place to keep your bike inside (no lock needed). Roads are in generally good condition kudos to Dutchess/Columbia Co. DOT. Mileage is approximate on author's cue sheet. The route takes you to Taghkanic State Park, Olana, Hudson Valley School Frederick Church's estate, Hudson, restored historic town, and Kinderhook, Martin Van Buren's hometown. Running this route over on a map before riding to familiarize yourself with details will save time by covering the distance without getting lost.
Read author's cue sheet for points of interest, stops and options.
