I am pleased to announce at our recent board of director’s meeting, the officers of the Club voted overwhelmingly to join Transportation Alternatives.

I can find no record in past minutes of board meetings, no memory of any members, no evidence anywhere the NYCC had ever been a member of Transportation Alternatives.  I am proud to be a part of the board that made this happen for our members.

Any action that improves bicycle life in our city; having the barriers on the West Side Bike Path moved so they are not a hazard to cyclists, improved bicycle access to the GW Bridge, miles and miles and miles of bicycle lanes in our city – it’s a safe bet TA had a hand in any action that has made our life in our backyard better.

And most important of all, TA’s most important objective, their most glorious goal - saving lives.  Of fellow cyclists, of friends, of family members.  I am so pleased the NYCC can stand with TA in support of that goal.

Wanted you to know.

Christy

Great news

Wonderful news appearing right on the same day as the message board reminder how TA worked to get safer streets in Eastern Queens. TA has fought and won many battles for cyclists and pedestrians and has many battles still to win. High praise to Christy and the NYCC Board for this great development.

As a long-time TA member . . . .

 . . . this is indeed welcome news. I think we have partnered with them on mutual issues before, but I also urge our membership to individually join TA. I think it's $20/year, a big bang for your buck! The monthly newsletter is fun to read, and informative about things that concern all cyclists.

Does this mean NYCC members

Does this mean NYCC members get TA discounts at shops and their events?  Will NYCC events be put up on the TA's bikenyc.org event calendar (eg. Escape NY, New Member rides, etc)?

Good thing for NYCC to have joined TA, surprised a bit though that this wasn't done a decade ago or so.

It is difinitive proof we care

I see some questions about our membership in TA.

Sorry for the delay in replying.  I was in Lake Wobegon these past few days – there is no internet service in Lake Wobegon.

What does our membership mean exactly for our Club and its Members;

         *     It means that anytime a NYCC member rides their bike down the Hudson River bike path, they will not be negotiating barriers put in their way – TA had them properly positioned so they are not a hazard to cyclists.

         *     Every time a NYCC member rides a bicycle on the streets of NYC, they will more than likely have a bicycle lane to  ride in – maybe even a protected bicycle lane. It is because of TA that most – if not all – bicycle lanes exist in this city.  It is because of TA that NYCC members get to ride in bicycle lanes. And will be riding in more and more bicycle lanes as time moves forward.

         *     It means that whenever a NYCC member rides across the GW Bridge after the monster cable replacement project is complete – if nothing else positive happens from this point forward – the improved bicycle path will be so so so much better than anything we have ever known.

         *     Any action that improves bicycle life in our city for a NYCC member, it’s a safe bet TA had a hand in it.

         *     And Just in case there was a NYCC member who wasn’t sure – our membership in Transportation Alternatives tells  one and all the NYCC cares.

Furthermore,

·         The New York Cycle Club, along with our logo, will appear prominently in TA’s media presence.

·         We are entitled to a free advertisement in TA’s “Reclaim Magazine” – this magazine has a distribution of 10,000 cycling and cycling friendly people.  What a great way to spread the word about NYCC.

·         We are entitled to a presence on TA’s social media – they have 20,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter and –

maybe – Instagram (not sure about Instagram).  A great way to spread the word about our Escape New York ride.

·         Our entire membership will be entitled to discounts on TA cycling events.  I don’t know how this would work yet or how much of a discount our membership will enjoy – stay tuned.

Cost;

Forgive me, I’m not real comfortable broadcasting our financial relations to the world.  Suffice it to say, our annual dues for membership in TA will be noted in our minutes for all the members to read as soon as they get posted on our Website.

What I don’t mind telling everyone, our annual dues for membership in TA is a fraction of what our treasury spends on the All Class Club Ride; a fraction of what it spends on subsidizing our year-end Holiday party; it is a fraction of what our treasury spends on our annual Newcomers’ Ride. Our annual dues in TA - what a deal.

If anyone has a burning need to know exactly what our annual dues are before the minutes get posted, drop me a line at President@NYCC.org and – once I verity your membership status – I’ll be pleased to tell you exactly what we are paying.

It’s all new.  We are the first cycling club to become a member of Transportation Alternatives.  We’re still figuring out some of the details.  But, I for one am so happy our Club is a member – The NYCC does indeed care.

Christy
