NYCC'ers, please help us get a bill signed by Gov Christie. It's S2894/A4165- which requires the state's driver's education curriculum, driver's ed manual and the license exam to include bike and pedestrian safety. Right now- there's almost nothing, which is partially why you will often hear the common refrain, "Roads are for CARS!" when you pedal in our fair state.

But Gov Christie has one last chance to change that- ok, start to change that- by signing this bill into law before it expires next Tuesday, Jan 16th- which is before our new Governor takes office. That's how it works.

Here is our action alert- click and send an email. http://p2a.co/a2nyrz8

Or else call his office: 609-292-6000

And let him know you ride in NJ and you have a wallet in your pocket.

We got this bill through both houses of the NJ legislature but now have an uphill battle, very much like the one that leads to the PIP HQ at Alpine.

Thank you very much!

I tried but...

...I have a NY address  and got this message "Uh-Oh! No officials were found for your area. Please check back later.". I think one needs to live in NJ, not only ride there.

Call!

Calling the Governor's office would circumvent that problem and get you to a live person. Then let them know you ride in NJ and support S2894.

Thanks.

A new, more amenable governor takes ofc. next week.

If government in NJ works as it does elsewhere, the bill will have to be re-introduced. New hope for the dead.

That kind of nay-saying gets

That kind of nay-saying gets us nowhere. This is one of the first times, if not the first, that we have generated public support for a bill in the state, rather than just hoping it will go through on its merits, or by having friends in the chambers. Yes, there IS a bike lobby in NJ. We get this bill through now, we can focus on additional legislation in the new session, such as the 3 foot bill. A simple call to Gov Tubby's office takes 30 seconds.

BTW, our main adversary on the 3 foot safe passing bill, Nick Sacco, just got sacked from his post as Senate Transp Comm Chair. The new chair, Bob Gordon, is an ally of bike & ped.

...for the record, I am not a nay-sayer here.

Me? Opposed and opposing legislation favorable to cyclists??!

Nowhere in my post did I express or even imply opposition to the bill. The point of it clearly was, if the bill dies this week--and I hope it won't--it can and likely would be re-introduced to a more hospitable government before the spring thaw. That is all. It was a note of optimism, not opposition.

We did it! Driver's ed bill signed into law in Jersey!

Gov Christie signed our bill in the waning hours of his gubernatorialship (is that a word?) and that's all that matters. A4165/S2894 requires that the state's driver's ed course, manual and license exam provide instruction on bike rider and pedestrian safety. This is a start towards safer roads. Thank you to all NYCCers who called the governor's office and gave this bill support. We had over 750 people respond to our email alert and many called also.

On to more legislation now that we have an ally in Trenton.
